New Norcia Bakery & Café | Mt. Hawthorn
With New Norcia’s Pain de Campagne from our Sunday Breakfast still fresh in our minds, we paid a lunch visit to their Mt. Hawthorn Bakery & Café on Scarborough Beach Road. I hadn’t been there for a few years & it looks like nothing has changed. Which, in this case, is a good thing. The same friendly service, relaxed atmosphere & tantalising array of fresh bread, cakes & savoury delights. On the a la carte side, the food is fresh, uncomplicated & satisfying.
Vanilla Macarons
We procured the only available table on the bakery side which was in full view of the pastry display. Which is why we succumbed to nibbling on a couple of vanilla macarons whilst waiting for our lunch orders to arrive. The texture had a perfectly crisp outer shell & light-as-air inside that both crumbled & melted in the mouth at the same time. I have tasted macarons from most of the well-known bakeries around town & believe the New Norcia macaron is my favourite. I actually don’t have much of a sweet tooth & was pleased to find these maracons tasted less sugary than others. We couldn’t resist buying a few more to go afterwards!
Tapas
From the Specials menu, housemade lasagne (individually served in a small ramekin), French style terrine with cumquat chutney, & grilled mushroom crostini with more of the fresh, chewy New Norcia baguette on the side. A very generous & delicious platter for one! If anything, there was too much bread & not enough terrine.
Chefs Special
Roasted field mushrooms stuffed with herb & fetta crumble, served with a lightly dressed side salad. No photo of this one unfortunately. A classic vegetarian dish with a satisfying crunchy topping.
Food Honest, hearty breakfast & lunch dishes made on the premises.
Service Generally friendly & efficient.
Highlight Oh the macarons!
Lowlight None really. If only they opened more cafés in other areas of Perth.
