Sayers Food | Leederville
If I ever decided open a café of my own one day, Sayers would be high on my local inspiration list. Why? Fresh, honest generous food prepared with thought. Full of flavour & attention to detail. A buzzing atmosphere. Casual, unpretentious. Coffee done well. It feels good & that’s why Sayers is such a success. And super busy.
Steak sandwich. Sautéed field mushrooms & grilled cheese topped with grilled tomato & relish on toasted Turkish bread. Doesn’t look like your regular steak sandwich does it?
Poached egg on toast with spinach & ricotta filled crepe. With pine nuts. I have a general weakness for pine nuts or cashews. An intriguing flavour combination for breakfast. This photo does not do justice to this brilliant dish.
Equally brilliant was the breakfast bruschetta. Two perfectly fried eggs draped over prosciutto, fresh tomato, dressed rocket & toasted ciabatta slices drizzled with olive oil.
Chicken salad. Strips of warm grilled marinated chicken breast, red onion, mixed salad leaves, cashews, carrot & tomatoes, a drizzle of pesto & a dollop of relish. All worked well together, but could have been improved with a contrasting crunchy textural element. Garlic croutons perhaps? More nuts?
Food Well-executed dishes that let the freshness & characteristics of the ingredients simply speak for themselves. They make some cracking cakes & pastries as well.
Service When it’s busy, the kitchen can struggle & hungry diners sit forlornly at their empty table. Particularly during breakfast service on weekends. Sip on a Five Senses coffee & engage in a bit of people-watching to pass the time. If it’s less crowded, then food is thankfully more prompt.
Design Cosy & electic
Highlight The food menu. I wanted to try almost everything on the list & in the display fridge.
Lowlight Stalking around looking for a soon-to-be-vacant table. It feels similar to trailing a shopper back to their car in a car park.
Rating 4 ricotta-filled crepes out of 5
Will we be back Most definitely.
