Small Bites: Little Caesar’s Pizzeria | Mundaring, Greenhouse | Perth, & roast pumpkin & goats cheese tart
This edition of Small Bites is all pizza related. To be honest, I don’t eat pizza very often, so I can hardly be called upon to suggest the best pizzas in town. However, in case you are wondering, food sponge is a fan of Little Creatures, Il Padrino Caffe, Ecco & Delisio.
Little Caesar’s Pizzeria
One very warm Friday night, we decided to drive up the hill & revisit the original Little Caesar Pizzeria in Mundaring. It has been several years since my last pizza from Little Caesar’s Pizzeria, established by the internationally renowned & multi-award winning pizza extraordinaire Theo Kalogeracos. I quickly grabbed a vacant table & left my husband to decide which pizzas to order at the counter. Which is why, predictably, we ended up with his favourite, a classic Chicken BBQ pizza (above), & then an unusual creation – Oysters Kilpatrick pizza (below).
The pizza menu at Little Caesar’s is comprehensive, very creative & offers something to suit everyone. I’m yet to try the unique dessert pizzas, but have heard they are quite special. The flavour combinations of the toppings were completely delicious, but it is the pizza base that stands out for me. Chewy & fluffy & crusty, not too thick & definitely not too thin.
Now, if only the kitchen staff scraped their youthfully dishevelled hair off their face & wore some protective hair coverings.

Greenhouse | Perth
After a couple of visits & drinks on the rooftop bar upstairs, it might be time to finally do a little post on Greenhouse to add to the plethora of blog reviews on Urbanspoon. Particularly as it relates to this pizza-themed Small Bites.
Potato bravas to share. Piled up inside a small terracotta flower pot with aioli sauce in an upturned glass jar lid & all served on a square of plywood. That’s how they serve food Greenhouse-style. Their creativity & reuse of materials is incredible & thoroughly inspiring.
Eggplant & mozzarella pizza. I must have completely misheard the waitress when she explained the pizza of the day, or perhaps I was just preoccupied with checking out the all unique eco-friendly construction & interior design elements. How on earth did I order an eggplant pizza when I hate eggplant? But it actually tasted pretty good. With a fantastic thin wholemeal-like pizza base. Admittedly I swapped half of my eggplant for some spiced lamb kebab & ate more than my share of potato bravas. Next time I visit Greenhouse, I’ll pay more attention to the menu.

Roast pumpkin & goats cheese tart
Designed to be less of a pizza & more of an open tart, this homemade beauty includes roast butternut pumpkin, clean creamy Meredith Dairy goats cheese, fetta cheese, caramelised brown onions & toasted pine nuts on a square of all-butter puff pastry. Served with a bunch of fresh curly endives on top. This tart was inspired by a lovely simple asparagus & goats cheese tart recently enjoyed at one of my favourite casual eateries, Vans Café in Cottesloe.

Oooh that goats cheese tart looks mouthwatering. Double trouble on puff pastry too. =D
By the way, Nunzio has closed Il Padrino Caffe. Apparently a chinese dim sum restaurant will be leasing the Jame St space. I hope the restaurant comes back in some shape or form.
Really?! Oh that’s a shame. I also hope they open up somewhere soon – their quattro formaggi pizza is unbeatable!
il padrinos opened new doors on Aberdeen street northbridge – nice new premises same good ol pizza :-)
btw – Bivouac Bar has taken the lease from the old caffe
Fantastic, thanks for letting me know. What’s bivouac like?
Oh dear, the look on your face when you realised you’d been served an eggplant pizza must have been heartbreaking. Reminds me of the time, when I was little, that someone told me to order the bruschetta entree as it was really yummy – this is all little me needed to hear so I ordered it and was totally dismayed when it was brought out – I hated tomato as a child! The chef actually came out to ask why I scraped off all the tomato and I had to tell him it was because I didn’t like tomato. I am sure I was as red as a tomato when I said it :(
I love the dessert pizzas from Little Caesar’s – haven’t been to the Mundaring one though, only Leedi! And I can so relate with your egg plant experience, I sometimes forget to ask for my meals without beans sprouts and am often fishing them out for 10 or so minutes before getting to my meal!
I’m yet to try a dessert pizza – what would you recommend?
The snowman is delicious! Vanilla sponge, dark chocolate, shaved coconut, vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce… :)
I haven’t actually been in to Bivouac yet just know the area well!… so cannot comment on food or atmosphere sorry… mixed reviews on urbanspoon
I’d like to eat at Little Lamb that opened up in Il Padrino’s new/old location on James St. I have tried it overseas though & the spicy chilli stock will set your mouth on fire! The rotating skewer machine looks like a fun novelty!
