Kai | Bullcreek
Kai only seats about 20 people at a squeeze. A tiny unobtrusive Japanese dining treasure in a small cluster of neighbourhood shops, underneath a curry house & next to a national cake chain. This restaurant can be difficult to find as signage is minimal, but once you do, you’ll be joining the throngs of hungry people descending on this seriously cheap & cheerful Japanese eatery. The chef/owner is formerly of Zen Japanese restaurant in Subiaco. We used to eat there at least two or three times a month for lunch or dinner. We then followed the owner when he decided to downsize & open up a much smaller, more casual place in suburban Bullcreek.
Our dinner for two that evening:
Agedashi tofu (pic at top of post). One of my favourite Japanese small dishes. When done correctly, the potato starch batter of the lightly fried tofu is silky & glutinous. The tentsuyu (dipping broth) is not too sweet & a fine balance of dashi (stock), mirin (rice wine) & shoyu (soy sauce). Sprinkled with finely sliced spring onion & bonito flakes (dried fish).
Assorted tempura set. Is this the best value tempura in town? At only AUD$16, you get to enjoy three king prawns, 2 large pieces of salmon & assorted vegetables. Seriously crispy tempura batter. Served with a dismally watery misoshiro (miso soup).
Teriyaki chicken set. A reasonable sized serving of chicken dwarfed by a salad with Japanese dressing.
Food Simple, appetizing, value-for-money Japanese food. That’s what keeps the punters coming back
Service Can be patchy at times, especially when it is busy. Your tea brew may be forgotten. Your whole table’s order may not out together. However you tend to forget about these discrepancies when the food is served
Design None whatsoever. Linoleum tables, plastic chairs, bright fluorescent lighting
Highlight The value for money
Lowlight Inexperienced service staff & waiting for the food. Oh and the dismal flavourless miso soup. So difficult to find a decent misoshiru that hasn’t been watered down to a murky water broth
Rating 3 cups of genmaicha out of 5
Will we be back Absolutely. Come early or be prepared to wait for a table
